September 19, 2013  By Liza Mayer

The Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries recently published provisional statistics for Norwegian aquaculture in 2012. The report presents information from the Norwegian aquaculture industry, including data related to hatchery production.

The survey shows that there were 129 hatchery companies and 200 licenses in operation during 2012 while the corresponding figure for 2011 was 137 and 209 respectively. Not surprisingly there has been a corresponding reduction in the number of employees and a small increase in the number of hours worked.

Reduction in employees

For the first time since 2004, there was a decrease in the number of persons employed in the production of juvenile salmon, rainbow and brown trout. In total, 1445 people were employed in 2012 while the number employed in 2011 was 1529. The number of hours worked, however, increased from 1,791,002 hours in 2011 to 1,813,153 hours in 2012.

Statistics show that there was an input of 602,335,000 salmon eggs in 2012 and 33,863,000 rainbow trout eggs. For salmon, this was an increase of 18.6% from 2011, while for rainbow trout it was an increase of 6.2%.

Increase in sales

Hatchery producers of salmon, rainbow trout and brown trout reported having sold 459,370,000 eggs in 2012, an increase from 2011 when 385,123, 000 eggs were sold.

There was little change in the selling price of eggs. The average selling price was 0.72 NOK (12 cents) per salmon egg and 0.55 NOK (9 cents) per rainbow trout egg in 2012. The corresponding figure for 2011 was 0.71NOK per salmon egg and 0.56 NOK per rainbow trout egg.

There was little change in the total sales of smolt and juveniles. The total sales of smolt and fry for salmon production are stated to be about 287 million salmon smolt and 19 million rainbow trout in 2012.

The average price for salmon smolt increased by 4.3% to 9.20NOK (US$1.53).
