As Hatchery International was going to press, the merger between trout farmer Dyrfiskur (Arctic Fish) and salmon farmer Fjardalax in Iceland was reportedly just weeks away. Talks are in process, but Arctic Fish chief executive officer Sigurour Petursson and Einar Orn Olafsson, of Fjardalax, allowed that there was still work to do.
The merger between the two firms started in June last year when a Memorandum of Understanding was signed. The companies noted that the merger would benefit both companies by providing each with more resources and better assets for their operations. Anticipated combined production of Atlantic salmon plus some rainbow trout would be less than 10,000 metric tonnes for 2016.
Each company brings a hatchery to the table. The one at Arctic Fish was completed in 2015 and the one at Dyrfiskur has been established for some time. At Dyrfiskur smolt swim in free-flowing fresh water, drawn from a well adjacent to the hatchery, where the water is filtered through lava fields.
